Last summer, the buzz was all about Thomas Beatie, “the pregnant man,” and his daughter Susan. Well, Beaties, step aside, now there’s something even better. A Spanish transsexual man claims he is 6-weeks pregnant with twins.

25-year old Ruben Noe Coronado Jimenez and his partner, 43-year old Esperanza Ruiz, happily announced the news to the world this week in the popular magazine Pronto. They plan to marry before the babies are born in September, and raise the children–both boys–together in Barcelona, Spain.

In every sense of the word, Coronado is still a woman. Once known as Estefania, Coronado had been undergoing the physical transformation of becoming a man. Photos of Coronado show a balding, bearded man. But Spanish law, as of last year, allows citizens to change their gender status without actually having sex change surgery (if the person is undergoing other kinds of gender-reassignment treatment, like hormones). The proud “mama” says she only retained her legal female status in order to undergo fertility treatment. Coronado took hormone treatment that would restart her periods, and then did in vitro fertilization. She plans to begin the administrative process that will legally transform her into a man this month. So, when she gives birth via cesarean section, she will actually be “he.”

Even though the pregnant soon-to-be-man announced the pregnancy via tabloid press, Coronado insists, “to protect my children I’m not going to sell my story now or in the future.” But she talked to the press in order that the world can start to see transsexual pregnancies as “normal.” But belly bumps are a different thing entirely. And since someone else will do it if she doesn’t, she may just sell a snapshot or two of “his” pregnant belly when the time comes. Can’t wait to see that one.

The obvious question in this case is, “Why didn’t Ruiz–the partner that intends to remain female–undergo the fertility treatment and carry the babies?”. And, as in the case with Thomas Beatie, there is a simple answer: the other partner couldn’t. Ruiz actually has two children from a previous relationship. But the aging mom was told by her doctor that she could not become pregnant again. So Coronado decided she would do it, even though she plans to become a man. And even though Spanish law doesn’t require it, Coronado does intend to complete the surgical sex job she interrupted. In a strange simile, Coronado compared her quasi-transgender status to having three hands. “You take advantage of them while you have them and you get rid of one of them when they get in the way.” Of course. When your uterus gets in the way, you just get rid of it.

So, are you buying it? Is transsexual pregnancy normal? And will Coronado be able to protect his children from the media?

On June 29, 2008, the world?s first ?pregnant man? gave birth to a baby girl. Ever since then, Thomas, Nancy, and Susan Beatie have lived in seclusion, refusing media appearances, and quite a bit of money, in order to be a normal family. But in Thomas?s own words, “Hiding a pregnant man is like hiding an 800-pound gorilla.” And now that the couple is expecting their second child, they decided to speak with Barbara Walters.

Once a teen model and beauty queen (as a finalist for Miss Teen Hawaii USA), Tracy never felt comfortable in her body. Beginning in 1998, she underwent gender transformation. First she took injections of testosterone, then she had her breasts removed. Though she never had phalloplasty (surgery to create male genitalia), nor had her female reproductive organs removed, Tracy was legally declared male, and changed her name to Thomas.

In 2003, Thomas married his long-time partner Nancy. And soon, as with many couples, they decided to have a baby. Since Nancy had had a hysterectomy, the couple decided that Thomas was the best surrogate they could possibly have. Although they were rejected by nine doctors for fertility treatment, the couple managed to inseminate Thomas without medical assistance, using donor sperm and an animal syringe.

After the delivery, the Beaties faced unusual issues when it came to identifying the baby?s parents on her birth certificate. But despite the challenges, and a few death threats, Thomas stayed off of testosterone so they could conceive again. Now in his first trimester, Thomas says he is healthy and feels good. The baby is due next June. Their announcement of baby #2 coincides with the release of Thomas?s book Labor of Love.

This is a weird one for me to wrap my brain around. Of course, it?s difficult for me to truly consider anyone male without a Y-chromosome. So in that respect, ?he? is really just a pregnant woman. Yet the state where they live recognizes Thomas as legally male, and their marriage as heterosexual. It just happens that Dad carried and delivered the baby. The Beaties insist they are a normal family. What do you think?

Thomas Beatie, the transgender man who became pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl on June 29 introduced his daughter to the media on Wednesday. She’s cute, and look at all that hair!

The little girl is named Susan Juliette after Thomas’ mother, and weighed 9lbs 5oz.

She was born after a marathon 40 hour labor. Respect to you, Thomas.

Both baby and dad are doing well. “I weigh two pounds less than I did before I got pregnant,” says Thomas. “And I don’t have a single stretch mark.” This couple are getting no end of abuse from certain groups, and now you can add the stretch mark afflicted and everyone still carrying baby weight to the haters.

Thomas’ wife, Nancy, is breastfeeding their baby, she induced lactation with hormones and physical stimulation with a breast pump, and Thomas is up at every nightly feeding to keep them company.

For some reason, perhaps because my son’s father is so apathetic about caring for his son, I like this story, I’m wishing this loving family well. Even though it took me a whole lot longer than four weeks to loose my baby weight…

An update to the story we reported in April: pregnant man, Thomas Beatie, gave birth to a baby girl on June 29.

Beatie was born female but has lived as a man since his 20s with the help of male hormone injections which made him grow a beard and stopped his periods. His wife had a hysterectomy, so in order to have a baby, Beatie stopped his hormone injections and conceived their baby with his own egg, and donor sperm.

As part of his transformation to a man, Beatie had his breasts removed, so
is unable to breastfeed his daughter, but he says that otherwise, the pregnancy was like any other.

Reports are that the baby is healthy, and everyone is doing well, and recovering at home.

An unusual way for the little girl to come into the world, but I think that it doesn’t matter if dad or mom gave birth to you, as long as you born into a loving family. Congratulations to the couple, and their new arrival.

An Oregon trans-gender man Thomas Beatie is allegedly 5 months pregnant with a baby girl.

Beatie was born female, but through hormones and surgery to remove his breasts, is married and lives as a man. His wife has medical issues that make it impossible to conceive, so he stopped his testosterone injections, waited for his periods to return, and conceived.

Accounts of the exact way the baby was conceived differs – some reports say donor sperm was used, and he is the baby’s natural father, some reports say donor eggs and sperm were used.

Apparently Oprah has offered the couple a 7-figure sum for the first TV interview with their baby.

Beatie is still living as a man, beard and all, and plans to raise the baby as her father.

Bizarre though this story is, it’s not the first time. Another trans-gender man and his partner conceived a baby in similar circumstances, and they now have a toddler son.
