In some areas, the potential for Radon gas exposure is high. In other areas, there is a low potential for exposure. You can check out your exposure level on the EPA website.

Where we used to live in Pennsylvania, the potential for exposure was very high. In fact, I remember that we got a free testing kit when I was in the hospital delivering my first child. That was the first time I’d ever heard of Radon.

Luckily, our house was free from the gas, but periodically, I did buy a test kit to see that the levels remained low. If the levels of Radon in your home are high, there are things that can be done to lower the levels. The fixes are relatively inexpensive I have heard.

I’d encourage parents to be proactive. If you live in a high exposure level, you may want to test your home regularly. At best, you’ll have some peace of mind. If the worst case scenario happens and you find that you have been exposed to Radon gas, you can fix the issue before your family has any health issues related to exposure.

Have you ever tested your home for Radon?

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Delta Enterprise Corp., of New York, N.Y., is announcing the voluntary recall today of about 600,000 drop side cribs. The crib?s drop side can detach when the spring peg is not engaged, which can cause an entrapment and suffocation risk to infants and toddlers.

If the spring pegs in the base of each leg of the crib are pushed back into the lower track, the pegs can become nonfunctional. This can cause the drop side to detach from the crib and create a gap that can entrap an infant or toddler.

CPSC staff is aware of a death of an 8-month-old child who suffocated when the drop side of his crib detached. CPSC is also aware of one child entrapment and one incident in which the drop side detached due to a disengaged spring peg.

The recall involves all Delta drop side cribs manufactured prior to 2006 that use ?Crib Trigger Lock with Spring Peg? drop side hardware design. The recalled model numbers and country of origin include: 4340, 4343, 4520, 4600, 4620, 4624, 4625, 4629, 4660, 4665, 4720, 4750, 4751, 4850, 4855, 4857, 4880, 4920, 4925-2, 4925-2B, 4925-6, 4980, and 8605. The model number, country of origin and manufacture dates are located on top of the mattress support board. The recalled cribs have Delta?s name and address on the mattress support boards and Delta?s logo on the teether rail.

The cribs, which were made in China, were sold at major retailers nationwide from January 2000 through January 2007 for between $33 and $200. Cribs currently sold at retail are not involved.

CPSC and Delta urge parents and caregivers to immediately stop using these cribs and contact Delta to receive a free, easy-to-install repair kit. Call Delta toll-free at (800) 816-5304 anytime after 5 pm today or log on www.cribrecallcenter.com to order the free repair kit.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to find a safe, alternative sleep environment for their child until the repair kit, with new safety pegs, is safely installed are the recalled cribs.

CPSC would like to remind parents not to use any crib with missing, broken, or loose parts. Make sure to tighten hardware from time to time to keep the crib sturdy. When using a drop side crib parents should check to make sure the drop side or any other moving part operates smoothly. Always check all sides and corners of the crib for disengagement. Any disengagement can create a gap and entrap a child. In addition, do not try to repair any side of the crib, especially with tape, wire or rope.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Davenport Cribs

Units: About 500

Importer: Baby Appleseed, of City of Industry, Calif.

Hazard: The cribs fail to meet the federal safety standards for cribs. The cribs have a two mattress support system. The secondary mattress support, used for the lowest position, does not meet the full 26 inch minimum height in its lowest position, allowing children inside to crawl over the railing, posing a fall hazard.

Note from CPSC Staff:
Federal Regulations require that all full-size cribs have a minimum rail height of 26? to help prevent fall hazards. To determine whether or not a crib meets this requirement, the mattress support platform must be placed in the lowest configuration (for the oldest users of the crib). Once in the lowest setting, remove the mattress and measure the distance from the top of the mattress platform (NOT the top of the mattress) to the top of the front rail. If the crib has a drop side or movable front rail, the measurement should be taken when the rail is in the uppermost locked position.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: The recall includes Davenport crib models that begin with the model numbers 273-xxxx-xxxx and have manufacture dates on or before August 2007 printed on a label located on the right side of the lower inner panel of the crib. The recalled cribs have two mattress support systems-a metal one and a wooden one. Newer Davenport cribs with model numbers beginning with 244-xxxx-xxxx that have one mattress support are not included in the recall.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Children and gasoline don’t mix. With the passage of the Children’s Gasoline Burn Prevention Act, an additional layer of fire safety and burn protection has been added for families across the country.

President George W. Bush signed the Act into law which requires portable gasoline containers manufactured for sale in the U.S. on or after January 17, 2009 to conform to child resistance safety requirements.

Gasoline containers will join containers with other flammable liquids, such as turpentine, charcoal lighter fluid, and torch fuel that are required to have child resistant closures. CPSC has jurisdiction over child resistant product packaging.

‘Families who purchase gasoline cans with child resistant gas caps and who keep all flammable liquids out of the sight and reach of children are improving the safety of their homes,’ said CPSC Acting Chairman Nancy Nord.

CPSC recommends these safety tips for consumers.

* Buy a gasoline container that is child resistant.

* Place a gasoline container in a well ventilated, cool area.

* Never store gasoline or other fuel inside the house, in the basement, or near a fuel-burning appliance, open flames, pilot lights, stoves, heaters, electric mowers, or any other sources of ignition.

* Never smoke near gasoline.

* Never carry gasoline in the trunk of the car. Escaping vapors can easily ignite.

* Keep gasoline, kerosene and other fuels out of the reach of children. Never permit children to play with matches or fuel.

CPSC also requires child resistant packaging for many products that are dangerous for children to swallow including over-the-counter pain relievers such as aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen, household cleaning products including drain openers, personal care products such as baby oil and mouthwash containing ethanol, and adult strength vitamins and supplements with iron. For aspirin and oral prescription medicine, special packaging has saved the lives of about 900 children since the early 1970s.
