Every woman is different and every pregnancy is different. What one woman might experience during her first pregnancy can be markedly different than another woman.
Following are some of the more common signs and symptoms of early pregnancy.
- A missed period. The first and most obvious sign many women recognize – and an equal number of women probably miss – is a missed period. While some women do bleed during early pregnancy, and may even have a period, missing menstruation is usually one of the most common symptoms in pregnancy.
- Swollen and/or tender, sore breasts. Increased hormone levels can result in breasts that are tender to the touch, sore, or swollen.
- Extreme fatigue. A symptom that hits many women as early as the first week after conception, extreme fatigue is a common and sometimes troublesome symptom. If you find yourself fighting to stay awake past the five o’clock news, you just might be pregnant.
- Mood swings. Hormone changes in your body can cause extreme mood swings, especially in early pregnancy.
- Backache. A sore lower back is common early in pregnancy and may stick around for the duration of your pregnancy. Try using a heating pad or hot water bottle to relax your back and alleviate some of the discomfort.
- Digestive distress. Increased gassiness, bloating, diarrhea and constipation can all be signs of early pregnancy.
- Morning sickness. Ah, the dreaded morning sickness. Some women only experience it once or twice, and other suffer through their entire pregnancy. If you’re feeling queasy, can’t keep food down or can’t stand the smell of certain foods, chances are you’re pregnant.

For me it was the very sore breasts (they felt huge, heavy, and sore) and the fatigue. I decided to take a pregnancy test after spending more hours asleep one day than awake!

For my sister it was definitely extreme fatigue. Her husband went and bought their pregnancy tests (pre-missed period) for their 2nd and 3rd child when he caught my sister falling asleep ALL THE TIME, but especially in the middle of the day in the afternoons.
For me it was just one of those strange “I feel different” feelings. I bought a test a week before my missed period because I just felt very different and I knew something was going on inside my body. The test was positive and now we’re 36 weeks preggy with our first!
