Pregnancy and Car Accidents

pregnancycaraccidents.jpgWhen I was pregnant with my second baby I was in a very minor car accident. I was stopped at a red light and the guy behind me smacked into my bumper because he wasn’t paying attention. It’s actually a pretty funny story because the poor guy ran up to my car to make sure we were okay, and when he peered into the window he saw that he had hit a car that not only had a very pregnant woman driving, but there was a toddler in the back seat. The look on his face was hilarious, because he was so horrified about the situation that he looked like he wanted to throw up, or slink away, or both. We were fine, but he was afraid I was going to go into labor or something.

After we got home, I called my doctor’s office to tell them what had happened. My doctor had told me to always call the office whenever experiencing any form of trauma because apparently there was a chance that the jolt of the collision could have harmed the baby. Even though it was a minor accident and I felt fine, they still had me come in and stay on a fetal monitor for a few hours. Honestly, it was quite a treat…ask a pregnant mother of a very active toddler if she would like go lounge in a bed for a few hours while nurses bring her water and snacks, and you’ll probably get a hearty, “Yes, please!”

While you’re pregnant you need to remember that even though you may feel fine, you still need to look out for the Little One growing inside you. If you have a car accident or some other accident, call your doctor and find out if you should come in and have the baby monitored for a little while to make sure all is well. It’s better to be safe than sorry, and if you’re like me you may actually enjoy the unexpected rest!
