Daddies and Sons

daddiesandsons.jpgMy husband and I were both thrilled at the birth of our daughter. We hadn’t found out what the gender was during pregnancy, so when she arrived in the delivery room it was a surprise to us both. When I was pregnant we never really expressed a desire between having a boy or a girl, and I think the big reason behind that was we didn’t want to say we wanted one gender and wind up with another. We went with the same idea most expectant parents go with: As long as the baby is healthy, we don’t care what the gender is.

When my second pregnancy rolled around my husband let me in on his secret: He wanted a boy, and he was willing to keep going until he got one. In other words, even though we had always talked about two kids at the maximum, he had a burning desire to have a boy and was willing to delve into having three, maybe four, babies if necessary. It wasn’t that he didn’t love his little girl, but apparently a lot of men having a burning desire to have a son.

When I contemplated the idea of everything that comes with having more than two babies (minivans, shared bedrooms, not enough room on my lap for all my babies at once) I felt pretty torn. I didn’t want to deny my husband a son, but my uterus and I had an agreement…after two babies we’re done. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with having a large brood of kids, but I know it’s not right for me.

We found out our second baby’s gender with an ultrasound because I had to know if I could celebrate this as my last pregnancy or instead brace myself for another pregnancy down the road. We were blessed with a son, and I was able to hang up my child-bearing hat. My husband certainly doesn’t favor my son over my daughter or vice versa, but I guess there is just something about dads with sons that makes him puff up just a little more when he talks about the kids.

It must be a guy thing.
