7 Phone Apps For Moms
Moms of today have it different from moms of say, 50, or even 10 years ago. They all have cell phones, iphones or BlackBerries, they tweet on Twitter, and they are on Facebook and various other social networking sites. In other words, they are wired and they are techno-savvy. Which is probably the reason why platforms have been created to reach out to moms and moms-to-be on topics ranging from pregnancy to dealing with adolescents. Check out the list I’ve compiled below.
7 Phone Apps For Moms
- Text4baby – Type baby for English and Bebe for Spanish and you’ll get answers– and it’s free. Just recently launched in February, text4baby is aimed to promote maternal and child health and was initiated by the US National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition (NHMHB). Here’s how it works: You register for free and you get free SMS giving pregnancy tips timed to your pregnancy. Thus, each message will be relevant to the trimester you are in and will continue coming right up to your delivery date. After delivery, the SMS will be focusing on childcare till your baby’s first birthday. How reliable are these tips? Well, the SMS have been written by prenatal health experts at NHMHB with the support of the CDC. It covers topics ranging from prenatal care, smoking, drugs, and alcohol, and labor and delivery, breastfeeding, sleeping tips and developmental milestone. The text4baby is available for free to 96% of mobile phone subscribers in the US.
Having recently upgraded from first generation mobile telephony to an iphone, I, of course, completely immersed myself into looking for useful apps. I was so amazed at how many applications are available out there for moms and dads.
- Pregnancy Alarm – Are you planning to get pregnant or trying to avoid it? Pregnancy Alarm is your all-around ovulation calendar.
- Expecting – For those expecting, an app of that name (Expecting) is available to track your due date and prenatal appointments. Other options are the iPregnancy, Pregnancy pregnant, and NineMonths.
- Contraction Manager – Now, iphone apps will keep track of your baby’s estimated size and weight and accompany you right up to your delivery date. On the big day, Contraction Master is there to help you time your contractions which you can then relay to your doctor or midwife or to your Facebook fan page.
- Baby Log – As soon as the baby arrives, Baby Log will remind you to change diapers, feed, and put down baby to nap.
BlackBerry Apps
Now, for the working moms who are never without their BlackBerries, there are also apps out there for you.
- Pregnancy Wheel – The medical software Pregnancy wheel is available as a BlackBerry apps and is for free. It, too, keeps track of your pregnancy stages and fetal development.
- Contractions Timer – A harried Dad-to-be wrote a free web application for BlackBerry to time contractions. ‘I wrote it because a friend said it is impossible to do the contraction timings at 3am after two nights of no sleep!’
Now, I’m pretty sure this list is just the tip of the iceberg. Share with us your favorite pregnancy/motherhood apps!

Thank you for this list. I wanted to point out one omission – BirthBerry, a contraction timer for the BlackBerry. But it’s so much more than that. You can time your contractions with a click, get all the stats you need to see how your labor is progressing and keep your doctor/family/friends up-to-date with notifications. Once your baby arrives, BirthBerry will help you send a birth announcement with a photo, so all your contacts can see your beautiful newborn. Visit babyberryapps.com to purchase, see screen shots and try a demo.

Another great iPhone app is “mommy to be”. It’s very stylish and has a lot of interesting and useful information and pictures inside. I liked it very much.
