Interesting, and I very much agree. There's much more to life than test scores.

Good book! I found that chapter surprising, too.

But considering we are building a separate room in our backyard to house our weight bench in order to add more book shelves for our new addition, and are both (well) over 30 before having our first kid, I'm not worried either. LOL ;) Seriously, though, the reminder does alleviate some of the guilt I had over NOT starting to read to our little one yet (in vitro, 24 weeks). I keep *meaning* to, but, I'll be honest, I feel a little silly about it.

Remember, the book only dismisses "what parents do" in regard to test scores, not in regard to all the other very important factors you brought up. :) And since test scores are skewed *anyway* toward people of certain socio-economic backgrounds, the scores themselves don't matter either. It's what people--a child or an adult--DOES, like you said, with the intelligence, talents and skills they have, that matters most. And parents can play a huge role in nurturing those skills and talents.
