There’s an email list circulating around that draws comparisons between men and women. One of those points I found interesting:
- Women – Know their children’s birthday and Christmas wish-lists, friends, romances, likes, dislikes, hopes, dreams and aspirations.
- Men – Are vaguely aware of some short people that seem to live in the house.
Of course, this is a bit of an exaggeration for the sake of humor, but there is some truth in it. The “traditional” view of parenting is that “The man makes the money and the woman raises the children.” While this has changed to a very large extent, a gap still lingers in a lot of cases between a mother’s involvement in their children’s life and a father’s involvement.
Speaking as the father of two boys, let me say for the record “Just because it’s ‘so‘ doesn’t make it right.”
Fathers need to be involved in their children’s lives as much as their wives whenever possible. Yes, it’s good for the children, and also extremely good for the wife, but there’s another reason…
It’s good for the fathers.
I’m not speaking of fathers who are absent for one reason or another…I’m talking about “Good Ol’ Dad”, who comes home from work, sits on the couch (or in front of the computer), and then goes to bed, all while their wives “carry on” and the children go unnoticed. It’s amazing how much you can learn from your children while you’re supposed to be teaching them.
As long as you’re paying attention.
