Too much sugar in kids’ breakfast cereals
Have you ever looked at the sugar content of your children’s favorite cereal? According to a recent study, only 4 out of 25 popular kids’ cereals were rated very good, based on sugar content. The 4 are Kix, Honey Nut Cheerios, Cheerios, and Life, with Cheerios topping the list. All of the badly rated cereals had 40% to 50% of sugar content.
So why should you care that a cereal is too sugary?
- Kids who eat cereal with 50% sugar are eating less of other more nutritious ingredients.
- These sugary cereals have more sodium as well, and significantly less fiber.
- Getting kids used to sugary breakfast and other treats preps them to prefer sugary everything, and are less able to appreciate the subtle sweetness of fruits, and other natural foods.
- Sugar isn’t very nutritious, and can raise insulin levels fast, which can lead to a depressed immune system.
- Too much sugar can lead to weight gain.
Check your kids’ cereals and give them something more nutritious for breakfast. After all, it’s the most important meal of the day.
