Teen Kills Newborn by Flushing Him

teenkillsflushinghim2.jpgOn Friday there was the sad report of a 14-year old Texas teen who gave birth to a baby in her school’s restroom and tried flushing the newborn down the toilet. The act of flushing the baby killed him. The young girl, who attends the Cedar Bayou High school in Baytown will not face the death penalty since she is so young, however there has been no announcement of what punishment she will receive.

According to reports the girl, who camouflaged her pregnancy with baggy clothes and so kept her condition as secret, gave birth at school. Another student heard the cries of the baby and ran for help; unfortunately it came too late for the baby. The school nurse and an assistant principal ran to the girl’s aid and called 911 when they realized what was happening.

I’m saddened by this turn of events, and was affected even more because just a few days earlier another 14-year old gave birth to a stillborn in an airplane bathroom.

I know that teenage pregnancies are nothing new, but for some reason I seem to be seeing more and more these days. However, a 2006 report from the Guttmacher Institute stated that teenage pregnancies in the US are down by 36 percent, the lowest it has been in the last 30 years.

Without being judgmental, I find myself wondering if there was no one these children could have spoken to about their condition. I hope they will get counseling to deal with their ordeals.
