fiveweekstallmother.jpgImagine having a baby that is just ten inches shorter than you. Stacey Herald, a mother of two doesn’t have to imagine such as scenario, she’s living it. Thirty-three year old Herald stands 28 ½ inches tall, a mere ten inches more than her five week old daughter, Makaia.

Herald from Kentucky suffers from osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a genetic condition which results in bones being so fragile they break easily, sometimes without any apparent cause, along with multiple other problems. Her condition is the reason for her small stature. Herald said that she was always told that she would be unable to have children or that pregnancy would be almost fatal, however, she had faith that she could overcome the odds.

Her first child, 16-month old daughter, Katira also suffers from her mother’s condition, but Makaia is expected to be normal size.

Osteogenesis imperfecta is classified in stages depending on the severity of the condition. Although there is no cure, certain treatment options and lifestyle habits are encouraged so as to control and help prevent some of the symptoms. Eating right to maintain body weight and exercising in water are some suggested control measures for persons suffering from OI.
