Somewhat ironically, the place with the most microbreweries and, ahem, “gentleman’s clubs” per capita also happens to be the best place to have your baby, according to a recent survey from FitPregnancy Magazine.Portland, Oregon was named tops in the nation for places to have a baby. Following Portland were Minneapolis, San Francisco, Seattle, and Denver.
The magazine says that Portland babies are 34 percent less likely to be born below normal birth weight, against national averages. Portland also boasts low infant mortality rates and low premature birth rates.
Breastfeeding also helped Portland rise to the top of their list. According to the article, 88 percent of mothers attempted breastfeeding their child (75 percent is the national average) and nearly 20 percent of mothers breast fed their babies exclusively for at least 6 months. Additionally, Portland is cited as having particularly progressive laws pertaining to breastfeeding in public.
Portland was also lauded for having a high rate of midwife and doula use during birth.
