Should You Test For Radon In Your Home?
You may be wondering exactly what Radon is. Radon is a radioactive gas that is colorless and odorless. Radon gas can seep into your home which can be a health hazard for your family; Radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer.
In some areas, the potential for Radon gas exposure is high. In other areas, there is a low potential for exposure. You can check out your exposure level on the EPA website.
Where we used to live in Pennsylvania, the potential for exposure was very high. In fact, I remember that we got a free testing kit when I was in the hospital delivering my first child. That was the first time I’d ever heard of Radon.
Luckily, our house was free from the gas, but periodically, I did buy a test kit to see that the levels remained low. If the levels of Radon in your home are high, there are things that can be done to lower the levels.  The fixes are relatively inexpensive I have heard.
I’d encourage parents to be proactive.  If you live in a high exposure level, you may want to test your home regularly. At best, you’ll have some peace of mind. If the worst case scenario happens and you find that you have been exposed to Radon gas, you can fix the issue before your family has any health issues related to exposure.
