Could Caffeine Cause Miscarriages?

couldcaffeinemiscarriages.jpgA new study done published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology seems to point to a link between caffeine and miscarriage. According to the study, women who consumed over 200 mg of caffeine a day had twice the rate of miscarriage as those who did not. The risk did not change whether the source of the caffeine was tea, soda, coffee, or chocolate.

Researcher Dr. Di-Kun Li says that caffeine is dangerous to developing babies because it passes through the placenta and can be difficult to metabolize. It’s presence may alter cell development and decrease blood flow to the placenta.

If you are expecting, or planning to conceive, you may want to consider monitoring your intake or removing caffeine from your diet all together.
