The Great Backyard Bird Count
All of my children, my son included, love nature. My son seems to gravitate towards spiders and ants. He loves to watch them. He also loves to watch the birds that come to our bird feeder.
We have a book that shows different types of birds in our area, and he loves to look at the pictures. Sometimes, we go outside and try to sit quietly and hear the different bird calls. Of course, doing anything quietly is not an easy thing for a toddler. These quiet times don’t last too long.
Next weekend, we plan to participate in the 12th annual Great Backyard Bird Count. I think it will be a great family activity. I’m sure that my son will enjoy watching the birds!
In order to participate, you agree to count the birds you see for at least 15 minutes either February 13, 14, 15, or 16th. After counting the birds you see, you can enter your sightings online at www.birdcount.org. You can also use the website to find out more about the program, and to learn how to identify different birds.
Data collected from the sightings can help researchers understand bird population trends and also help them develop conservation plans for the future benefits of those populations. Besides helping scientists in their conservation efforts, you’ll be sharing some great quality time with your family in the process.
Have you participated in the Bird Count project in prior years? Are you thinking about participating this year?
