Goodbye, Acrylic Nails

Back in June I wrote a post about how I had indulged in a set of acrylic nails right before going on vacation. I loved the way they looked but lamented about how difficult it was to do some of the simplest tasks like picking things up off the floor, but they looked awfully pretty. I also wondered how long it would take before I got fed up and gave up on the nails altogether.
Last night I finally took them off. They lasted much longer than I thought they would, considering we’re into the middle of September. I really thought I could get away with having pretty nails while caring for my two little ones - especially since there are no more poopy diapers to deal with - but there were a few instances where I started to realize that maybe these nails just weren’t conducive to my lifestyle.
Situation #1: In ballet class my daughter asked me to tie her laces, and my nails were so bulky that I couldn’t manage to do it and had to sheepishly ask the instructor to do it.
Situation #2: While pulling dinner together one night I couldn’t get the inner cap off a spice jar. I had to pull out a knife to shimmy it open.
Situation #3: Right before a fill, when my nails were really long, I couldn’t button my son’s pants.
The kicker of all this…the final incident that helped me to decide that I didn’t want these nails anymore was when I went in for my last fill. Generally it’s a nice block of time to sit and relax while my husband manages the kids, but when I sat down the manicurist switched on football on the television and wanted to chat it up about which teams he liked and why.
If he thinks that I want to watch football during my relaxation time he’s completely insane.
Yes, I’ve decided that too much time and money goes into maintaining fake nails, and it was time to go back to my stubby nails that never really look nice no matter how hard I try. Oh, well. At least I don’t make that annoying clackity-clak-clak sound when I type anymore.

As moms, we are constantly caring for little ones, cleaning up spills, changing diapers, etc… Sometimes we need to indulge a little bit in ourselves–I just had highlights put in my hair at a fairly high-end place and spent way more than I should have. I’ve had the fake nails in the past, too (the pink and white gel ones that look pretty natural). Little things like this can make us feel more “put together”, more like “women”-not just “moms”…But the upkeep can be tough and the nails can make everyday tasks difficult, as you said. Anyway, I can relate!
