July is National Blueberry Month
The US Department of Agriculture has proclaimed July as National Blueberry Month since 1999. But what is so special about this fruit aside from its taste?
Recent research studies show that blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium) is a concentrated source of antioxidants. It has the highest antioxidant capacity per serving among 20 types of fruit evaluated. It’s no wonder that its health benefits are wide-ranging. It can help prevent cancer, reduce your cholesterol, and neutralize metabolic problems brought about by fatty, unhealthy diet.
Blueberries are native to North America and they grow as low bushes in wooded and open areas. So a lot of blueberries are actually wild – all yours for the picking!
