Dancing: a new rehabilitation program for heart patients

Dancing your way towards health is much more fun and effective compared to doing more conventional forms of exercises.

Paula V Quiroga, an Argentinian doctor reported her success using different types of dance steps in treating cardiac patients at the World Congress of Cardiology 2008.

For low-intensity warm ups, the patients danced to the blues. For medium level intensity exercises, it was dancing to rock and roll or to distinctly Cuban danzón rhythms. For high exertion levels, vigorous salsa steps were prescribed. Now how wouldn’t prefer these over the boring treadmill and speedometer?

The patients had lots of fun and came back for more, resulting in better compliance and less medical complications.

“It’s a great alternative to the conventional rehabilitation program …and helps them avoid a sedentary lifestyle,” said Quiroga.
