Funny, but looking back at my decision to have my first baby without pain relief, I feel like I was foolish! I did not expect hours of back labor (all night long); in fact, I don't think I'd ever heard of it. I loved my midwives but wished we had discussed the option of an epidural. I can honestly say that labor was more painful that first time than I'd expected. I did not feel like a hero for going it without an epidural; I don't get why some women feel that they have to be martyrs. In any case, I don't feel like a more "accomplished woman" because I gave birth (all 3 times, as it turns out!) without pain meds.
