Perhaps it’s the local thrifty, practical Scandinavian heritage, but every weekend from now until fall neighborhoods here are bustling with yard sales. I expect it’s the same where you live now that spring is here.

As a new Minnesotan, I love yard sales just as much as the long term residents. Yard sales are my favorite place to shop for my son. Clothes, toys, and gear for children are among the best buys at yard sales.

You can get some wonderful bargains, but shop carefully. Yard sales are one place where the old adage Caveat Emptor – buyer beware – truly applies.

Inspect everything carefully, especially things for babies, and anything that a child could get hurt in if it’s defective or broken, like a swing, or a baby carrier.

Things to avoid are older toys which would have been made before modern safety standards. Same goes for cribs, clothing, and other gear.

Battery operated things should only be bought if your child will still love if it doesn’t operate. The batteries might be dead, or the thing might be broken.

My favorite bargains? An exersaucer for $5, which he lived in for about four months, and a Baby Bjorn carrier for 50 cents. And the very best buy? The free toys and extra things that a seller threw in when we bought an armful of other things. We got a little red wagon free with a bunch of books and my son still loves towing things around in it over a year later.

My mom and youngest sister are sewing many Christmas gifts this year. Last year, my mom made me the cutest flannel nightshirt; it was red with little cups of steaming hot cocoa on it, and extra-roomy for my then pregnant belly.

Another year, my sister created the most amazing velvet Christmas tree skirt for us and my mom made us an adorable angel tree-topper. This year, when it was time to take out the decorations, baby got a hold of the angel and pulled off much of her curly, blonde hair and halo. Fortunately, I was able to fix her!

Most years, the boys and I make handmade ornaments for family members. With such a tight budget this year, handmade ornaments would be perfect, but things are much busier with baby in the picture and we haven’t gotten around to it. Last year, we made beaded candy cane ornaments, which are very easy to make:

bend craft wire in the shape of a cane
thread beads, alternating red and white (be sure to tie a knot at the bottom so your beads don’t slip right off)
then tie a festive ribbon around the middle.
You can add a standard wire hanger or a simple loop of wire for hanging.

We made similar wreath-shaped ornaments, using wire shaped in a circle, green beads in alternating light and dark green, and a bow.

We also made a couple of different ornaments from inexpensive Martha Stewart kits I bought from Michael’s. Her line of craft supplies and kits are great—I highly recommend them for any holiday, birthday or just for fun.

There’s still time for making simple projects such as these; people always appreciate the thoughtfulness and time spent, especially when little kids’ fingers did the work!

I’m looking forward to seeing the amazing things my mom and sis are crafting this year. I also love the handmade gifts the kids make in school.

Gifts made with love, “especially for you” are always the ones I treasure most. Do you have any handmade treasures you’ve received over the years? Are you making any gifts by hand this year?

With the holidays, come more toys. While this is a busy time of year, it’s worth setting aside a few hours to sort through some of that stuff that has accumulated to make room for… more stuff!

I have given away many toys over the years, as my older boys have outgrown or lost interest in them. It feels good to recycle and give less fortunate families a brighter Christmas. For several years, I thought our family of four was complete. Fortunately for our recent addition, baby #3, I did save some of our nice, classic toys (to pass on someday to our grandchildren, or so I thought!).

We still have our train table and huge container full of Thomas and Brio trains, tracks, buildings and more. Wooden trains are classic, something to pass down to the next generation. I recommend hanging on to them even when you’re kids have outgrown them, to give to your grandkids someday. Giving or loaning them to family members is another option but if lending is what you intend to do, be clear about your intentions.

Other classic toys worth storing away include wooden blocks, shape sorters, building sets such as Lincoln Logs and Tinker Toys, certain dolls, books and wood puzzles. These toys stimulate creativity and things like hand/eye coordination.

Toys with sentimental value are also worth saving. Some classics change over the years but it can be fun to store away your or your children’s editions for grandkids or future guests to enjoy. I have the Fisher Price schoolhouse that I played with as a little girl, which was fun for my older kids to inherit and play with (and will be enjoyed by our 7 month old, I hope!). I wish my mom had held onto more Fisher Price classics, like the school-bus, dollhouse and farm. Fortunately, I saved the ones we bought for our older boys, so our little guy can play with them someday, too.

Classic games like checkers, Candyland, and Chutes and Ladders are nice to keep around (their look may change but the games cross the generations).

So what do I recommend tossing or giving away? Usually the toys that quickly lose their appeal for kids, particularly the trendy things that are “in” one year and “out” the next are safe to give away. Trendy things like character-themed toys and dolls usually won’t be missed.

Of course, the really junky, “no-name” plastic stuff that was made in China can be tossed (you may have tossed them already, due to health or safety concerns).

There are definitely some toys I wish I’d held onto but didn’t, like our older boys’ elaborate Playmobil sets. We were never organized enough to keep all the pieces together. Our youngest child would definitely have enjoyed these. If we do buy him well-made, expensive toys such as these, I will try to keep them in tact for future grandkids.

As my kids have grown older, it’s become clearer just which toys stand the test of time and which are best donated to someplace, or someone, else. I’ll be steering clear of the low-quality stuff with our new baby, if he’ll let me.

Although I don’t agree with all of their selections, I thought I’d pass along some of the toys on the list for 2008.

Walk’N Sounds Digger the Dog – The toy is intended for young children, but the long walking string is a choking hazard.? The group points out that according to federal law, all strings on pull toys are supposed to be no longer than 12 inches.? This string is 26.? I truly had no clue that the government even regulated this.

Meadow Mystery Sounds Book with Cuddly Pooh – According to the packaging, the toy was tested for children from 18 months up.? The group says that the mask included in the book could pose a choking hazard.

Inflatable Giga Ball – This toy is a blow up ball that is so huge that a child can crawl into the ball.? The toy is not recommended for children under 4.? The group feels that the ball poses a huge safety threat even though parental supervision is suggested.? This toy looks like fun, but I don’t know if I’d let my kid play inside a big plastic ball in our unfenced yard.

Spiderman Adjustable Skates – This one made me laugh because it’s a set up Spiderman skates with “safety gear”.? However, there is only 1 knee pad and 1 elbow pad.? The packaging does say that you should make sure to wear knee pads, elbow pads and a helmet when skating.? If you decide to purchase this toy for your child, you will need to purchase safety gear separately.

What do you think?? Were you planning on purchasing some of these toys for your children?? Does the fact that these toys made the “worst toys” list cause you to reconsider? Stay up-to-date with current baby related recalls and unsafe toys right here at the Babies Online blog

At least, I try to be. Whenever someone makes my day or goes out of their way to do something for me, my family or someone else I know, I like to say thanks by giving them a meaningful gift. It can be something small, like a batch of home made cookies or a hand made card, or something larger to go along with a larger gift.

Thinking along these lines, I started to wonder: what kind of gift could I give the nurses who help with my labor, delivery and recovery in just a few short weeks? What sort of gift would be appropriate for the men and women who are going to be helping me with one of the best gifts that anyone could ever receive? How can I possibly express my gratitude?

With all the expenses of a newborn, money is definitely tight, so here are some inexpensive ideas I came up with:

Flowers. A single rose or other flower (perhaps the birth flower for that month?) for each of the nurses.

Candy, Cookies or Snacks. Small boxes of candy, a tin of flavored popcorn or a fruit basket that can be shared.

Breakfast. Bagels and cream cheese or a box of doughnuts in the morning is a great way to start the day on a positive note.

Gourmet Coffee. The coffee in most hospitals is pretty bad – treat the nurses to the good stuff!

Handmade Ornaments (for the holidays) or Other Hand Made Items. I enjoy knitting, and have thought about knitting up wash cloths or some other small items that I can hand out to the nurses. Bath salts or other crafty items also make nice gifts.

Don’t forget the thank-you notes and birth announcements!

What will or did you bring to the nurses when you delivered?

When I got remarried, I moved 800 miles away from my family, who mostly reside within a 50 mile radius of each other. Family friends live about 1 ? hours away in another state, but for the most part, everyone is centrally located.

When we announced the great news that we were expecting, my sisters began planning me a shower as it had been 9 years since the birth of my last child! It was assumed that I would make the 450 mile trip north to attend my baby shower where everyone lived, as it was the most logical plan. Apparently, life doesn?t follow logic.

I was put on modified bedrest during the last few months of my pregnancy. With my husband away with the Army for training, and four other children to care for, life was challenging enough. When I mentioned the baby shower plans to my doctor, he nixed them. That was too far of a drive to do alone and even if I could have someone help me out by driving, it wasn?t advisable.

My sisters were disappointed, but not deterred, and began planning the ?new? baby shower?without my knowledge. Recently, I saw an article about a family who gathered together and actually had a virtual shower for a woman in their family who had moved far away because of her husband?s military service. Both the woman and her family had webcams and they could watch her open up her gifts. That is an awesome idea, but sadly, my family is not technologically equipped.

Instead, most mailed the gifts to my home at my sisters? request. Others, who could make the trip, drove the gifts to a place where friend?s of my husband lived. He would be traveling that way after his military training, and could pick up the gifts before heading back to our house a few days before our child was due to arrive.

On my end, all I knew was that the baby shower had been canceled. I was deeply saddened and disappointed, but I tried to concentrate on the positive things like the fact that my child was healthy, that my pregnancy would soon be over, and that my family cared enough to suggest a shower.

On the day my husband was to arrive home, my mother-in-law stopped by to clean the house for me. I have to admit, my husband doesn?t care if the house is clean or not, so this was a shocker. Even more shocking was the fact that she arrived with a large amount of food from a local caterer. About an hour or so later, my husband arrived home with a car load of gifts and a few minutes after that, the neighbors arrived with gifts in tow.

We had a great time opening gifts and calling the different relatives on the phone to share the excitement with them?the low-tech version of the webcam experience. Although it wasn?t quite what it could have been had all of my loved ones been present with me while I was opening the gifts, it certainly was a very good option given the circumstances.

So why is it that society’s etiquette seems to say that showers for a second baby are not acceptable?

We’re expecting baby #2. As such, my husband and I are debating and deliberating a number of things: baby names, how to help our first born adjust to not being the only baby any more, and whether it’s proper etiquette to have a baby shower when it’s not the first baby.

I think it depends on what your goal is for the shower. We want to have a second baby shower to share the joy and celebrate with our friends and family, whom we don’t get to see as often as we would like. Our idea of the shower would be a brunch or a casual barbecue, taking place on a sunny summer afternoon in our backyard or someone else’s, where we can sit back and just enjoy spending time with each other.

Instead of gifts, which we don’t really need, we might ask for a donation toward the second child’s college fund. However, some people just can’t imagine a shower without gifts. For them, we might suggest the following non-traditional shower gift ideas - in fact, they could even make unique shower theme ideas.

Books. We can never get enough books. Guests can bring a copy of their favorite children’s book – whether from their own childhood or what they read to their own children - to give to the new baby.

Freezer stock. Everyone brings a frozen casserole or other dish that we can stick in the freezer until the baby arrives, so that we can enjoy a hot, home-cooked meal every now and again.

Savings bonds. An investment toward baby’s future.

Memberships. A membership to the zoo, the city parks department for free admission, or the local Y can be a great help to new parents.

It’s a pretty tight-knit group because we’ve been hanging out together since our first-borns were just a few months old.

We have a tradition in this group. Whenever a lady is about to have a baby – no matter how many other babies she may already have – we always throw her a baby shower and we always get her a gift certificate for a pedicure at a spa. I was a pedicure recipient back when I was out-to-here pregnant with my son during the hot summer months. I guarantee you one thing: A pedicure never felt so great as that pedicure did. There’s nothing like getting tired, swollen feet rubbed and cared for, and even though I had to strain to see my toes at least I knew they were pretty.

You might also consider booking a massage with a licensed massage therapist, but be sure the LMT has a special bed to accommodate pregnant bellies.

When considering a gift for an expectant mom, think beyond gifts for the baby. It’s always nice to receive cute baby clothes and toys, but if you’re in charge of a baby shower then add a little something for the mom. Remember, she’s been schlepping a baby in her belly around for months and she’s about to embark into painful labor and a long recovery. It’s a great idea to give her a little pampering before the baby comes along.

If the pregnant lady you’re buying for isn’t necessarily into pampering, consider buying her something that will make her life easier. A friend of mine had a mom who bought her one free housecleaning from a professional team of cleaners, and another friend received a gift certificate for services from a local window cleaner.

If you’re planning a baby shower, don’t forget a little something for the lady responsible for the baby!

Apparently yes, according to a recent study published in Science.

And shoppaholics would be surprised to hear the results – spending money on other people is more fun than spending money on one’s self. And, after you’ve spent money on other people, you gain more satisfaction in buying something for yourself.

Is this something new? I don’t think so. Ask moms with little children. I’m sure most of us would rather shop at Baby Gap outlets and toy stores than spend our money in high-end boutiques.

What is new is the effect of the so-called ‘prosocial spending’ – spending money to buy gifts for others and donating to charity. It seems that this type of spending is closely related to an individual’s overall satisfaction with his/her life.

This link between generosity and happiness is not dependent on income. It’s not the absolute amount that translates to happiness – it’s all relative to what you have. In fact, poor people tend to put a higher proportion of their income on prosocial spending than rich people. However, on the average, people tend to allocate about 10% of their monthly budget to prosocial spending, according to the researchers.

Philanthropic acts of donating to charity can make you happy but it’s not the only factor that’s involved. According to surveys, Americans are tops in terms of ‘per capita charitable donations’ but they are not tops when it comes to happiness. Less generous countries such as the Netherlands and the UK have actually much happier citizens.

Do you remember a time when households had to borrow a camera from a neighbor or an aunt just so the latest addition to the family will have his picture taken? And do you remember a time when pictures are taken only during special occasions like birthdays and the Holidays (you know, those classic poses behind a birthday cake or in front of a Christmas tree?).

Well, in this digital age, that time is no more. Even cellphones can capture a baby’s everyday smiles now. And babies nowadays have hundreds of pictures taken even before they reach the age of one.

So what to do with these pictures?

Well, aside from uploading them to the internet to share with friends and family from afar, or posting printed copies on your ref, bulletin board, door, or bedroom wall, you can also use them for personalized souvenirs and giveaways for special occasions.

Babies Online’s Personalized Gifts section offers so many ways. First, there is the tie-up with Clark Color where registered members can get 15% discount on photo gifts. Now you can paste that sweet face on mugs, teddy bear shirts, buttons and many more. Choose a really great picture and have it printed as a mouse pad, which all your friends are sure to use. For my son’s christening, I had his picture printed on a mug and asked the recipients (via a note inside the mug) to use the mug as a coin-tainer for loose change.

Other personalized gifts offered by Babies Online include Personalized Books and Music CDs. These are sure to tickle your baby pink to hear his or her name read or sung out loud!

And then there’s my personal favorite, The Birthday Chronicles is a must for every scrapbook and would be a brilliant giveaway for christenings and dedications. It would also be lovely to have it framed and every child you have to have one. It’s the best easy reference for how the world was like when you were born. It’s even a perfect birth announcement.

Sure, you can still give cupcakes and pies or knitted and cross-stitched somethings. I’m just saying that you might want to maximize the photos you have painstakingly taken (and with babies, it sure is not always easy to get them looking at the camera!). And there really is so many ways now to personalize gifts, it’s crazy.

I was a bloated exhausted seven months pregnant and the thought of a room full of my husbands crazy French relatives, and my own family made me long for the couch, a Snickers, and some maternity sweatpants….

But I suffered through it. I had spent hours pouring over baby stuff from Target and made a fantastic (if I don’t say so myself) registry of top notch baby chairs, swings, and polka dot swaddlers. I will be honest ? I’m an opinionated young mom who believes in ?stupid stuff? girls don’t need to wear pink in order to diffuse future gender issues….My list was a colorful array of lemony yellows, and deep forest greens. At my baby shower the only item I got that I requested was a first aid kit. Sitting in the center of a restaurant surrounded by pink frilly nightgowns I wanted to sob. So, from a post-pregnant-hormonal-current mom to the go-er of a baby shower….here are the top ten items you can get someone who’s full of baby:

Diapers and wipes. I know I know you were probably thinking along the lines of an elaborate ?going home form hospital? gown but lets face it: all babies do is poop and pee. Diapers are expensive and a new mom can’t get enough…the thought of a nursery chock full of supplies is comforting for a new mom who’s going to want to spend what little free time she has napping, not cruising the baby isle of Shop rite.

Get a diaper genie, for said diapers and wipes. If you wanna be really cute get a 100 pack of Pampers for newborns, and the genie. It’s a god-send!A nice safe, powder fresh place to store dirty diapers.

Gift cards (I know I know, I need to get the boring stuff out of the way) Once said diapers run out and the mom to be (who may or may not be nursing or pumping or formula feeding) will need baby stuff. Baby stuff can get expensive and there’s nothing more satisfying than realizing you have a $50 gift card to Babies R Us so you won’t need to shell out your own money.

Onesies. Remember when I mentioned poop and pee? Well, I forget drool, vomit, and boogers. New moms sometimes swoon at the idea of dresses, and little sailor outfits for their newborns but the truth is we are often too exhausted to deal with anything less than a piece of cotton that has three buttons. And when you end up changing said newborn five or five hundred times per day it’s nice to have an endless supply of onesies around.

A month’s worth of pick up laundry service. This will be the best gift ever, I can promise you.

If you’re the DIY type why don’t you make a coupon book, similar to the kind you might have made your parents when you were too little to have a real job, and real money to buy them gifts? Coupons that say ?4 hrs babysitting while you sleep in? or ?two meals cooked by yours truly…?

Bibs. Hundreds and millions of bibs…pre-baby I had a nice stack of about thirty in my linen closet and now I’m lucky if I can find one before I force feed my daughter rice cereal. There is is parallel universe where all the bibs end up, floating around.

A breast pump. I know this tends to cater to the boob-mom but even the worst kind of boob-mom sometimes needs a break. Maybe she wants to go out for dinner, maybe she wants to sleep through the night? She’ll need to pump, and pumping is expensive. Chip in, or rent the woman a breast pump! You can also scour Ebay and Craigslist for them.

Subscriptions to mom-magazines. You’d never guess, but there are lots of fun friendly magazines that make the (sometimes) dull monotonous days of mommy-hood go buy. My two personal favorites? Cookie and Wondertime. Steer clear of Baby Couture unless your mom-to-be is materialistic and the type to chuckle at six year old girls looking like mini Kate Moses.

The baby Bjorn baby chair. It’s pricey, but there’s a reason…it’s a miracle worker. It’s pretty basic (red or black gingham I believe) and has wooden toys once baby becomes interested and develops that fun thing called hand eye coordination. The little one can relax, or once he’s ready sit propped up to view the world. While being a mini voyeur he can twirl the wooden bears or suck on them, while mom does what she needs to do.

I hope I helped at least one person. One person with a sense of humor and the understanding that the basics in baby-buying are important

So we’ve finally gotten all of our Christmas decorations packed away and managed to stuff the last of our used wrapping paper and gift boxes into the recycle bin. But there’s no time to relax, because no sooner has the holiday season ended than birthday season has arrived. My son turns 4 in two weeks, followed by our daughter’s first just two weeks after that.

My to-do list is still packed, but looks a little different: swap baking Christmas cookies for ordering birthday cake; buy gift bags adorned with construction trucks or flowers, instead of Santa or snowmen; and send out birthday invites instead of Christmas cards.

The one constant on both lists is buying gifts for the kids, which is always tricky business when they’ve already gotten loads of stuff over the holidays. We tend to be low-key on gift buying for the birthdays (and store extra gifts from grandparents to break out during the summer) but the question of what to buy is even more complicated this year. I’ve noticed a very interesting thing with the Christmas loot: My son is playing with my baby daughter’s Little People playhouse, while she is checking out his police car and Screaming Monkey. My husband and I worked hard this year to get our daughter some more “girly” things, just so she’d have something that wasn’t a hand-me-down from her brother in which construction trucks, trains or cars didn’t figure prominently. Guess we didn’t have to worry about that after all. And because he’s “big brother” he likes to play with everything that belongs to our daughter, maybe because it reinforces that he’s “in charge.” Maybe we’ll get them a joint birthday gift of a toy dump truck filled with stuffed animals and dolls, and then they’re both happy.

Is there a “battle of the sexes” when it comes to your playroom, or are a lot of your toys gender-free?
