Your son sounds a lot like our daughter - who is still in the crib and whom we will keep in the crib for as long as we possibly can! She would just get into too many things if we left her alone in her room in a big girl bed, unless we removed literally everything else from her room.

We just moved our 17 month old daughter into her toddler bed (same as her crib, but it has rails). She really, really enjoys her "big girl" bed. We were efficient in toddler proofing the room, there are still a few things she can get too (stuffed animals and book - she has ALOT of books). The only funny thing is that we put her in bed at night - she insists on having "a book" in bed along with her dinosaur and pig. For a little while, I will hear what sounds like paper shuffling and page turning and then she will doze off. However, in the morning, I awake to the same noises, no talking. When she does begin to say something, it's usually her reading. I hear certain words like ball, fish, moon, doggy...etc. Then I'll hear "Mama" or "Milk" or something of the like and I know it's time to go get her. Only thing is by that point (and this was extremeley funny the first morning to see) - there are usually several books in the bed, or on the floor and she's sitting there pointing at things and naming them! I have to laugh because I can't really punish her for this - the girl enjoys reading in bed! It's just so funny because she gets the books and climbs BACK into the bed : )
