Looking back, I can attest to the fact that personalities are present at birth.

I have four sons, and all their personalities presented themselves early.

Son #1 was premature by six weeks. He managed very well, although colicky the first few weeks. He was a happy baby, only displaying crankiness when hungry. He never put foreign objects in his mouth as was expected of infants. He was wide eyed and inquisitive but easily dissuaded when his behavior was unacceptable. He was always eager to please. He was diagnosed (incorrectly) as learning disabled early on. He was an average student through high school. Took a job at a Hardware store where he was loved and admired for his abilities. As an adult he excelled. When he decided he wanted more education he was tested at well above average with an IQ of 128 and graduated in the top 10% of his class. He is very successful in his chosen career. He is very open minded and able to accept all
Opinions and attitudes, encouraging those that may have been misjudged as children. He works with troubled youth, teaching them to push beyond what is expected.

Son #2 was also premature by four weeks. He was strong willed from birth, rolling over constantly in the ICN until they had to tie him down. He was an anxious baby with a mind of his own. He was fussy only when he was confined. (Those were the days when tummy sleeping was desired) He was competitive from the start, always pushing to better his big brother and friends. He excelled in college, graduating with a 3.9 GPA, and disgruntled that it wasn't a 4.0. He has been successful in several areas of pursuit, always looking for something better.

Son #3 was three weeks overdue. Very quiet baby. Wide eyed from birth, always taking in his environment. I finished my degree while he was a baby and took him to classes with me. He was always quiet and seemed interested in all that surrounded him. He became our mascot and graduated with me. Hi was always inquisitive, often waking in the night with questions...How far are the stars?, what happened to the dinosaurs?, etc. He excelled academically, finishing his second Masters Degree and is now working on his PhD.

Son #4, also three weeks post term. Completive from birth. Always trying to keep up and exceed his big brothers. He was an excellent student, but opinionated, often remarkable. He was able to grasp abstract concepts at an early age and excelled in school. He has always been opinionated and fights for his beliefs. He was contrary to a fault and asked to take a semester off from college. He never returned but pushed to another path. He is successful in his field and sought out by others more experienced.

Take heed of your child's personality and foster his/her strenghs. Don't try to change them, it is to no avail.
