Once in a blue moon I’ll go and get a professional manicure or pedicure just to treat myself to something nice and have my hands or feet look good for a couple of days before they’re wrecked again by the rigors of motherhood. My daughter has always been quite impressed with the process, so when she turned four I took her into the salon and treated us both to manicures. She wore a birthday crown and announced to everyone that this was her first manicure.
Now that’s cute.
While we were getting our nails done I asked the owner if many people brought young kids in to get manicures and pedicures. It seems to me that four is a little young for such a thing, but it was a birthday treat and she enjoyed it a lot. She particularly liked the little flowers they painted on her thumbnails.
“Moms bring their babies in here all the time for manicures and pedicures,” he told me.
“Babies?” I asked. My daughter’s young, but certainly not a baby any more. “Who was the youngest?”
“I had a lady bring her seven month-old in for a pedicure,” he told me. I was flabbergasted. A seven month old getting a pedicure? How did they keep her still long enough to get the paint on her toenails, and more importantly, how did they keep her from sticking her toes in her mouth after the pedicure was over?
One thing was for sure: I certainly didn’t feel foolish for bringing my preschooler in for a manicure after hearing this story.
Of course I wanted my babies to look presentable, but the thought never occurred to me to take either one of them in for a pedicure when they were still in diapers. I really don’t get this. Besides, what message are you sending to your little girl if she had pedicures every month in a salon from a very early age? I wonder if this little girl is going to grow up very high maintenance. Well, at least she’ll have pretty toes.
I’m not even going to go into how I feel knowing that there is a baby out there who gets pedicures on a more regular basis than I do.
Does anyone else think this is a little weird?

I can’t imagine having my baby’s toenails painted! Maybe as a treat for my child, but not before age 5 or so (and I would probably do them myself at that point–with eco-friendly, safe nail polish that can be peeled off or removed with alcohol)

Yes, a little weird for sure. But I try not to pass judgment on people. I can just imagine the costs, however. Imagine if they took that $10/week and put it into a college savings plan, instead???
I’ll teach my daughter (when she’s four or five) that pedicures and manicures are a special treat, for special occasions, and it’s just as much fun to paint your nails at home, or have your mom, sister, girlfriends, cousins or whomever do it for you.
