New Experiences

You probably already know that you need to give your baby plenty of opportunities to experience new things as much as possible. It’s repeated over and over again by all the baby experts we turn to when we want to make sure we’re doing everything we need to do in order to bring up babies right. We want them to be smart and adaptable, so we do as we’re told without really questioning the reasoning behind the advice.
I’m no scientist, but I do have a degree in psychology and learned a little about the neurological process while I was in school. If you’ve ever wondered - like I did - about exactly how new experiences help make your baby develop cognitively, then you’re in for a treat. I’ll explain the actual process behind it without getting too complicated.
It boils down to this: Babies are born with a bunch of unconnected receptors in their brains. Every time a connection is made, the brain works more efficiently. How do you connect the receptors in the brain of a normal baby?
By allowing them to experience new things.
So when your baby gets to pet a goat at the zoo, BANG! A receptor connects. When you allow your newborn to feel various textures of cloth, POW! Another receptor connects.
That’s the simplified version anyhow, but when I learned this it made me much more giddy every time I knew I was taking my baby somewhere new to experience something different.
Yes parents, we are amazing…we have the ability to alter the cognitive ability of our babies. You don’t get much cooler than that.
