Moving up From a Crib: Time for a Toddler Bed!

Technically, my son had a crib, but spent about 4 months of his 2 1/2 years sleeping in it. He started off in a bassinet, in-and-out of my bed, into the crib at about six months, then refused to sleep in it, back to my bed, then back in the crib, then back in my bed, and he’s been sleeping in my bed for the last few months.

I’m a work-at-home mom which usually means I’m typing away on the computer from his bedtime until about 2 a.m. so he doesn’t actually spend all that much time sleeping in the same bed as me. So I theorized that he’s in my bed out of habit, rather than a need to be with me. (weep weep!) And, so, logically, it’s time for him to have his own bed.

I tried to buy him a bed a couple of months ago, which resulted in the tantrum of all tantrums in Ikea. The hissy fit wasn’t over beds, actually over macaroni cheese in the cafe, but I’ve been wary of going back for a while!

Today, I hope that the memory has worn off and we went back to look at the toddler beds again.
Toddler likes the cheapest one in the store (yippee!) and is ambivalent over bedding options so I pick out a quilt cover with hippos on, take him for a spin around the warehouse on a cart, pick up the bed and we are heading home and I’m wondering if it was almost too easy?

OK, so he’s not sleeping in it. We dismantled the crib that had been gathering dust, assembled the brand new bed together, and he spent the afternoon getting into it, pretending to go to sleep (and giggling) then hopping out. But when bedtime neared, various people who also live in the apartment building start shouting, and having noisy arguments and he’s reluctant to go in the new bed. So he’s sleeping in my bed tonight, and we’ll try again tomorrow.

Wish us luck!
