How To Treat Baby Rashes
Contrary to what you might see on TV, baby skin is not perfect. Babies can get all kinds of rashes and they can also have “baby acne”! What should you do if your baby develops a rash?
Diaper Rash
The most common type of baby skin rash. Diaper rash is often caused by simple irritations such as tight fitting clothing rubbing against the skin. It’s a popular option these days for diapers to be lined with plastic for trapping in moisture and preventing leaks. This trapped moisture can also cause diaper rash to your baby’s sensitive skin. Another possible cause of diaper rash is heat.
Heat Rash
One of the most common causes of rashes I have found is simply over-dressing your baby. Heat rash can affect babies who have been over-dressed very easily. If your baby has a rash that has developed suddenly, check to see if he is warm and change his clothing so he’ll be more comfortable.
Detergent/Chemical Rashes
Some babies are very sensitive to detergents and soaps and can develop an allergic rash from these products. Make sure to wash your infant’s clothing in detergent specifically designed for babies. It is also best to skip the fabric softener as this can further irritate your baby’s skin. When you bathe your baby, wash your baby with a product designed especially for babies.
Skin Rash Treatments
There are a variety of products available over the counter to help heal skin rashes. I use Baby Eczema Cream by Gentle Naturals to help heal my son’s skin rashes but there are plenty to choose from.

Of course, if you are unable to determine why your child gets rashes, or if over the counter products don’t help to heal the rashes, you should take your child to the doctor.

I applaud the post about baby skin. Yes it is unique. But I find it interesting that you advocate using things like A&D and gentle naturals, etc. These things are full of parabens and petrochemicals. Petroleum jelly is a by-product of the gasoline industry. If they don’t want it, why would you put it on your kid’s skin?
I advocate using things that are plant based. Shea butter, calendula, and aloe are great natural alternatives.
Calendula especially is good for eczema, which my sons both suffer from. Try California Baby. It is all natural, not expensive and available at Target and online in numerous places.

We love California Baby too because unlike many others it is ok to use with cloth diapers. Of course, one of the best ways to avoid diaper rash is to use cloth. Our son has sensitive skin and we’ve dealt with baby acne & eczema on his face but he’s never had diaper rash.

Jess, it is important that, while advocating for natural products, that you keep your comments respectful. Otherwise, you turn people off. Your comments are valid, and you do have a good point. I have to tell you that I have never personally used the products that you are advocating. My article was about things that I have experience with. Everyone is different and we all have different ideas. Sharing them without sarcasm and with respect is important. I have used cloth diapers with my children for example, but they got numerous rashes. That was true for my kids, but might not be true for others. I have had success using the products I cited above. I stand by what I wrote.
