Does Breastfeeding Make Your Breasts Sag?

wondering.jpgIt’s often cited as a reason to not breastfeed, or the regret of the breastfeeding mom that otherwise loved nursing. Breastfeeding makes your breasts sag. Or does it?

Sadly many moms and babies miss out on the benefits of nursing because they fear the damage it will do to their bodies, how it will affect their relationship with their husband or partner, and the effect on their body image and self confidence.

To breastfeed or not is each mom’s choice, but news from a study done by a group of plastic surgeons in Kentucky might affect the decision. The doctors discovered that breastfeeding doesn’t cause breasts to drop. The damage is done before you even make the choice of breast or bottle - pregnancy makes your breasts sag.

Luck and genetics play their part too, as do your age, how many pregnancies you’ve had, and whether you smoke cigarettes or not.

What can you do during pregnancy to minimise the damage? Apply stretch mark cream to your breasts as well as your belly, avoid gaining excessive weight, and always wear a supportive bra.

Gentle toning exercises to strengthen the muscles that support the breasts will help, but consult your doctor before you do any exercise and get direction from a professional who works with pregnant women. Now is not the time to hurt yourself.

But the bottom line is, pregnancy will change your body, your soul, and your entire life with it. Every mother I know, moms who have nursed or formula fed, moms who embrace the changes as a mark of motherhood, moms who accepts them, and moms who fret over them, have all said the change to her body is a small price to pay for her beautiful baby.
