Coping with Baby’s Teething

When baby first begins to cut his or her teeth, it can be a difficult time for both baby and parents. When our daughter first began to cut her teeth, we noticed a few of the typical symptoms: gumming on anything and everything she could get her hands on, putting her fingers in her mouth, and what seemed like excessive (and incessant) drooling.

While overall her teething wasn?t too tough for any of us, there were some tricks we used to ease some of her pain.

  • Teething rings. When we could get her to hold onto these things and actually chew on them, they did help to ease some of her pain. Tip: for water filled teethers and teething rings, refrigerate them first so the chill helps to numb the gums.
  • Gum massage. Using your clean finger or a rubber finger toothbrush, massage his or her swollen gums.
  • Soak a clean wash cloth in water or juice and freeze. The frozen cloth is small enough for baby to hold onto and the chill of the cold ice can help to numb the gums.
  • Baby Tylenol or Ibuprofen can help with baby?s discomfort, especially at bedtime if he or she is waking up several times during the night or having trouble falling asleep; be sure to check with your pediatrician before giving your child any over the counter medications and to ensure the proper dosage.
  • Homeopathic teething tablets and natural teething gels are also on the market now; again, talk to your pediatrician before giving any of these to your child.

You may also want to keep a bib on your child while he or she is teething to catch some of the excessive drool. Just be sure that the bib is loose enough and not secured too tightly, and that baby is able to pull it off if needed.
