Changing Table Diversions

changingdiversions.jpgOnce your baby begins to get more mobile, it will become difficult to keep him or her occupied on the changing table. Sometimes as suddenly as overnight, your baby will turn into the biggest wiggler you’ve ever seen and will do anything he or she can to twist, turn or crawl away when you’re trying to change him or her – before that new diaper even gets close to his or her bare bottom.

Here are a few of the diversions that have worked for us to keep our daughter occupied when we’re changing her diaper.

  • Sing a silly song. As soon as we start singing to her, she perks up and listens. Don’t worry if you don’t know any children’s songs; anything can be turned into a song. Make up a rhyming song with your child’s name, or sing a narration of what you are doing while you’re changing the diaper.
  • Sing a nursery rhyme. A nursery rhyme – especially with hand movements – can help to distract a wiggly baby and get them to settle down, at least for as long as it takes to finish changing that diaper. Try “The Itsy Bitsy Spider” or the “The Little Piggies,” or a hand clapping song like “Patty Cake,” to distract your child and help to speed up the process of changing that diaper.
  • Give him or her a toy. A sock, a fresh diaper, a piece of cloth – anything can be a toy for your child and keep him or her occupied long enough for you to get the job done.
  • Hang up a mobile. A mobile over the changing table can be a welcome distraction for baby as well as a learning opportunity. The music and motion of the mobile, as well as the different shapes and colors of the objects, will stimulate baby’s brain and give him or her something to pay attention to instead of lying there bored or trying to get away.
