Bath Time

When my daughter was a baby, one of the daily tasks that terrified me more than any other was giving her a bath. There was just something about maneuvering her through the bath and dealing with a slippery baby that scared the heck out of me. For the first few months my husband and I always gave her a bath together. One of us would hold her steady while the other one washed her. It was nerve-racking, and I couldn’t imagine giving her a bath all by myself.
Then my husband got orders to Iraq. The day before he left for his deployment he was out mowing the lawn, so I looked at my daughter and asked her, “What do you think, should we give this a try?” She answered me as well as a five month old could answer, so we headed into the bathroom and I gave her a bath by myself for the very first time. When my husband came into the room, he looked at me as though I had just painted the entire house while he was outside. I felt like a hero.
I’ve since grown accustomed to taking care of bath time all by myself, and nowadays it’s two kiddos splashing in the bath instead of one. It just goes to show, however, that the very things that terrify you when you’re a new mom will someday become just normal everyday things. You’ll never know what you can accomplish until you actually try.

I know exactly what you mean. I bathed my twins the first time when they were still at the hospital under the close supervision of a nurse but that didn`t keep me from being terrified. They were so small that I was so scared I`d drop them, break a limb, or simply do something wrong. But yes, trying, especially if you don`t have a choice helps a lot. Then it becomes a “piece of cake.”
