Baby Photo Sessions

Your baby will only be a baby once in his or her lifetime! All too soon, he or she will be taking that momentous first trip on the school bus to kindergarten.
During the first year, when babies change so quickly, I try to schedule photo sessions every 3 months. It is amazing to look back and see how much our son has changed since he was born!
Perhaps the thought of taking an infant to a photographer every so many months makes you want to scream! It can be stressful, but it can also be a fun time if you take some time to prepare yourself and your baby.
Here are some of the things I’ve learned(mostly the hard way) over the last 14 years:
1. Always schedule an appointment to have your child’s photo taken. Make sure you schedule a time that baby is usually happy! Scheduling an appointment during nap time is not a good idea.
2. Avoid getting photos during the Christmas rush season: late November and all of December.
3. Shop around and check out the package deals that different studios offer and choose one that fits your budget and needs(for example, do you want a custom photo session or just a basic photo session?)
4. Pick a studio with a photographer who genuinely likes children and has experience with children.
5. Realize that you might not get “the perfect shot”. Seriously consider accepting the “really cute” shot as your final photo. Recently, our son had his photo taken at a local shop and although he had a great smile on the one shot, his sock had slipped off. I took the shot anyway, mostly because it gave me a chuckle. Our son is always losing his socks and in years to come, this will be a precious reminder this!
6. Try to limit the length of the session. I’ve found that the longer a session goes, the fussier a baby can get.
7. If you are unhappy with the photo session, consider calling the customer service line associated with the studio. Several sessions ago, the photographer never showed up for our appointment. I called the number listed on the studio advertisement and got a coupon in the mail for a free session for my trouble!
Do you have a photo session tip or a photography studio you could recommend to others? If so, please post!
