My kids love music. When my daughter was a newborn there was one certain Mozart song that would always calm her down, no matter what the situation. It certainly came in quite handy, but the CD has since been lost and I can’t remember the name of the song but I can certainly hum it by heart. My son has also been a huge fan of all things musical ever since he was a newborn, and now that he’s at an age when he can dance along to music he has an even bigger appreciation for melodic tunes.
I like music too, but I don’t like the saccharine-cheery sounds that come with most CDs designed for babies and toddlers. Sure, I can deal with The Itsy Bitsy Spider, but when the song is sung by an apparently eternally optimistic singer who has an absurd propensity toward vibrato I can only listen to it three or four times in a row before I feel as though my head might explode.
Am I the only one who feels this way?
Rest assured that there are plenty of music CDs designed for babies and young kids that won’t make you feel nauseous. My current favorite is the They Might Be Giants: Here Comes the ABCs because it’s not only enjoyable to listen to but it’s clever too. I have also found that I can withstand repetition of both Veggie Tales and The Doodlebops. Both are catchy while also passing along educational ideas to the kids listening.
If you are suffering through your baby’s music CDs then try going shopping for some new music. If you take the time to look around you can find music that your baby responds well to, but which you can also hum along to as well.
