preventingprematurebirths.jpgNew research presented recently at meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine in Dallas has found an added benefit for those women who take folic acid.Women of child bearing age are already advised to take folic acid in order to prevent birth defects of the spine and brain. However, the new research has found that women who take folic acid supplements for at least a year before becoming pregnant also lower their risk of giving birth prematurely.

The US Public Health Service recommends that all women of child bearing age get at least 400 mcg(micrograms) of folic acid daily. Pregnant women are advised to get at least 600 mcg(micrograms) daily.
