ddaywhattopack.jpgYou’re 37 weeks pregnant and have started dilating and thinning out. The baby has now dropped and is engaged into the 0 station. The Braxton Hicks contractions that you have been having are now actually helping your body achieve something. The doctor tells you that it can be anytime now-all you have to do now is just….wait. While waiting; you are busy preparing the nursery for your new little one; making sure all her clothes are washed; blankets neatly folded; diapers carefully placed in the diaper holder by the crib; the wipes, diaper rash cream and baby lotion are all carefully lined up on the changing table. You are going to be the most prepared mother-ever! So proud of what you’ve done, you can’t wait to tell your hubby when he comes home. He tells you that you have done a wonderful job, but asks, “Where’s the bag of stuff you need to take to the hospital?” Panic sets in. “Oh, no!” you exclaim, “I forgot about that!” Here you thought you were going to be the most organized and prepared mother that ever was and you have forgotten to prepare to get her home. Sobbing, you sit down and try to figure out what to take. But where do you start? What does a new mother and baby need to go to and to come home from the hospital? For mom-to-be:

  • Two bed pillow with favorite cases (to help you feel more relaxed and comfortable during labor)
  • Favorite lotion or massage oil
  • Warm socks
  • Toothpaste and mouthwash
  • Lollipops (for during labor when you get dry mouth)
  • Chapstick or lip gloss
  • Picture, stuffed animal, or anything soothing to use as a focal point
  • Hand-held back massager
  • Nightgown (one that opens in the front if planning on nursing)
  • Comfortable clothes to wear home (either sweatpants or clean maternity pants)
  • Toiletries and cosmetics

For dad-to-be

  • Important insurance information
  • Snacks
  • Phone numbers and change or a phone card or cell phone
  • Change of clothes
  • Toiletries

For Baby

  • Going home outfit, including hat and blanket

These are just some ideas for the basics that you may need. They can vary depending on what you feel would make you comfortable. But hopefully these ideas can give you a starting point to prepare to get your little one home.
