In a study conducted by researchers at University of Pittsburgh and University of Michigan, two out of five 10 year olds were found to have already tasted alcohol. Two out of 3 parents were aware that their child have had sips of alcohol however.
Other results of the research:
- Children have most often sipped alcohol during religious services i.e. Mass
- Parents who drink are more likely to have children aged 10 years old or younger who have tasted alcohol.
- Most children have sipped alcohol with an adult present, not alone or with friends.
- A third of parents were not aware of their children tasting alcohol.
- There was a correlation between tasting alcohol at a young age and behavioral problems.
Hmmm…I wonder what the results of the same study would find if conducted among children in Europe?
No matter what your beliefs are regarding the topic, keep in mind it’s considered illegal for anyone under 21 years old to be drinking alcohol.
