A shop in Japan has come up with a unique way to involve friends and families of new-born babies into the excitement. In a country of millions it is not always possible to get a chance to see the new bundle of joy right away – so why not use a substitute instead. To help fill the void, a shop in Southern Japan has come up with the “Dakigokochi’.

The Dakigokochi, is a sack filled with rice that is send around to those who are unable to visit the new baby. This proxy baby is no ordinary sack of rice - it is actually shaped like a baby and weights the exact weight of the child it represents. To top it off, the innovative shop keeper in Fukuoka also prints the baby’s name and face onto the sack. This cuddly sack is then held and cuddled just as if it was the real baby being made a fuss over.

Using rice bags with babies’ pictures is nothing new, but there has never been anything that was made especially for holding for the Dakigokochi.

The only hitch with this innovative way of sharing in a birth is the reluctance of relatives and friends to eat the rice once they have finished cuddling the proxy baby.
