School Gardens Boost Nutrition with Kids

garden.jpgOakland Based Urban Gardens (OBUGS), is a nonprofit providing gardening education programs at Oakland schools. Working weekly with first graders, the group is showing the children, who have almost no experience with fresh foods, where their food come from and how it grows.
Kidsgardening.com discusses the different school subjects that can be taught through school gardening:

90% teach science
60% teach community service
55% teach math
45% teach arts
45% teach health and nutrition
41% teach intra/interpersonal relationships
35% teach interdisciplinary
35% teach English
28% teach social studies
26% teach cultural studies/issues
24% teach physical education
16% teach history

It’s great that these programs are teaching kids that food growing in the ground looks a lot different than what they get at fast food restaurants, maybe this is the first step in really teaching children about healthy eating. It’s easier to want to eat a avocado when you know what one looks like.
