A Boy Named Friday

A case has recently gone through an Italian court forcing a couple to change the name of their 15 month old boy. The parents registered the baby under the name of Friday and had him christened as such. However, this issue was brought to a tribunal, under a ruling that children shouldn’t be given ridiculous names and then this was taken to court and then followed by an appeal. The court have decided that he should be called Gregory, after the feast day that he was born on. Apparently, in Italy, Friday is considered unlucky so the name was not considered suitable. The parents, not surprisingly, are not at all happy about this and say that they will continue to call their son Friday, although on any official documents he will have to be Gregory.
How would you feel to be told what you should call your baby. I would welcome your comments.

This issue seems to be a very common thing in Europe. The German authorities also tend to be complicated with given names. I’m a writing a post about it myself. And yes, I agree, it can be very annoying.
